POËT-LAVAL IN DRÔME PROVENÇALE
Between the Vercors massif and the Baronnies massif, the exceptional village of Le Poët-Laval reveals itself...
Here, time seems to have stopped in the Middle Ages. This picturesque village exudes an atmosphere of tranquility conducive to contemplation and walking along its cobbled streets lined with old houses. The authenticity and charm of its exceptional architectural and natural heritage make it one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France!
Founded in the 12th century by the order of the Hospitaliers of Saint John of Jerusalem, it was fortified to serve as a stopover and refuge for pilgrims leaving for the Holy Land. At its summit stood a castle of which the imposing feudal keep and ramparts still remain today as well as a vast dovecote built in the 17th century, described as the 2nd most important in Provence. From here, you can admire the famous panorama of the wooded Jabron valley.
A stronghold of Protestantism in the region, Poët-Laval has a “Museum of Dauphinois Protestantism” installed in an old 15th century residence, which became a temple in the 17th century. The village is also home to the Yvon Morin Art Center, dedicated to various cultural activities such as exhibitions, concerts and conferences.
